vision & mission statement

The International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching is a peer-reviewed, international, academic/professional journal, which aims to bridge the gap between coaching and sports science.

The journal will integrate theory and practice in sports science, promote critical reflection of coaching practice, and evaluate commonly accepted beliefs about coaching effectiveness and performance enhancement. Open learning systems will be promoted in which: (a) sports science is made accessible to coaches, translating knowledge into working practice; and (b) the challenges faced by coaches are communicated to sports scientists.

The vision of the journal is to support the development of a community in which: (i) sports scientists and coaches respect and learn from each other as they assist athletes to acquire skills by training safely and effectively, thereby enhancing their performance, maximizing their enjoyment of the sporting experience and facilitating character development; and (ii) scientific research is embraced in the quest to uncover, understand and develop the processes involved in sports coaching and elite performance.

The journal will publish peer-reviewed, original papers representing a variety of quantitative and qualitative research methods. Case studies of work between sports scientists and coaches are especially encouraged. The journal also encourages the submission of papers, including advocacy pieces, which may have been presented in a forum or special interest group at a conference; and philosophical works that address connections between sports science and coaching. The peer review process is open, meaning that both authors and referees know each other's identity. Such a process, with its transparency, is in tune with the mission of the Journal.

Sports Science was originally concerned with how athletic performance could be improved and injuries prevented. It has increasingly become concerned with 'health-related' exercise. The Sports Science Handbook captures the contemporary scope of the field that is increasingly referred to as 'exercise and sports science.' In the USA, the term 'kinesiology' is frequently used to refer to the academic study of physical education, including the scientific and health aspects. In addition to explaining many scientific and technical terms, the Sports Science Handbook provides concise overviews of subject matter and clarifies confusing issues. It is an encyclopedic dictionary that is largely a 'review of authoritative reviews,' with many references to key books and journal articles.

Annual Review of Golf Coaching

vision & mission statement

Most Tour players now have a number of different coaches to help them with the mental, physical and technical sides of the game. Today, therefore, it is more relevant to talk of 'Golf Coaching' rather than simply 'Golf Instruction' or 'Golf Teaching'. The mission of this technical and peer-reviewed publication is to bridge the gap between scientific and practical knowledge in golf. The articles in the 2007 Annual Review can be placed into five categories: Swing Technique and Biomechanics; Technology & Feedback; Psychology of Performance and Practice; Golf Development and Coach Education; Strength and Conditioning. The best of recent research is brought to the lay reader along with expert contributions from leading figures in the coaching world. This book will be required reading for coaches who themselves wish to take advantage of the latest developments, and will appeal to all serious amateurs who want to be aware of what is happening at the cutting edge of their sport. All academic departments of sports science and physical education will find this book a very worthwhile addition to their library.

Among the contributors are Dr Bob Rotella, who consults to players on PGA Tours on the mental side of the game; and Dr Gary Wiren, the only active member of both the PGA to have been inducted into the PGA Hall of Fame and the Golf Magazine World Golf Teachers Hall of Fame. The Editor, Dr Simon Jenkins, is Principal Lecturer in Sports Coaching with the Carnegie Faculty at Leeds Metropolitan University and has formerly been an Associate Coach with the English Golfing Union. He also edits the International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching, and is the author of the Sports Science Handbook.

The Annual Review of Golf Coaching will promote reflective practice in the golf coaching community and become a key source of knowledge for continuing professional development. It will also provide global, economic and political overviews of the golf coaching business.

The review process of the Annual Review of Golf Coaching is 'open,' which means that both authors and reviewers know each other's identity; and acknowledgment of the reviewers' work is footnoted on the first page of each article. This process has proved to be successful for the International Journal of Sports Science and Coaching.
